Fashion models starving to death
Filed in archive News on November 17, 2006
Ana Carolina Reston, a Brazilian fashion model, starved herself to death two days ago. Australian news report:
"Reston, 1.72m tall and weighing only 40kg, had been in hospital since October 25 due to a kidney malfunction. Her condition became more serious and deteriorated into a generalised infection that led to her death on Tuesday."
Ana became a model when she was 13, modeling for Ford, Elite and L'Equipe agencies. She traveled the world following her career, she died only a day before her planned trip to Paris where she was supposed to shoot an editorial.
Ana's relatives reported that Ana refused to eat anything except apples and tomatoes in fear of putting on weight over the past year. Her bodyweight was so low that her body was incapable to fight a urinary infection which developed into kidney insufficiency and finally led to total sepsis that killed her.
Now, can anyone tell me how do those designers and model agency managers claim they check their girl's health? How can they even look themselves in the mirror when they know that their unrealistic and even sick requirements kill people? I wrote about the necessity to change some things in fashion industry, what do you think?

Oh no! That is awful.

I don't think she was crazy, I think she was in need of some support and guidance, which apparently no one could give. We all have to do something about this unrealistic image, so write to your Congress people and get your voice heard!

Indira, apparently fashion designers, glossy magazines and TV decides how we should look like. It sucks.

i think 5-10 kg is not to much to be seen in all of body i mean if she was only 50 kg instead of 40 kg, she didn't die fron anorexia

It is really sad to know about such a painful experience that the model goes through, eating only tomato and apples for a year? I can’t even think about it. To me, my first priority is health, after all “health is wealth”.

OMG!!! You can be cute and fat just to let you know! Actualy I'm quite skinny, but I think that if you are "fat" then lose it the healthy way not starve yourself. And if you are super skinny then EAT! Everyone is beautiful no matter their weight. All those fashion magazines suck! Don't listen to them! Anyone!!!

They do it i will surely won't. I couldn't care less if people like to ruin their lives well let them. When we are talking about a disease it's different but just starving to be pretty well not interested.

Oh my God.. I love my body the way it is..I'm not fat and definitely not skinny! The point is I prefer to eat what I want..`cause I love food..then starve to death :| That's absurd..

Well… this is silly… I really don’t think the way you look counts… The beauty of the body is passing… I mean… whatever if you eat or not, you will get old and you won’t look like a model.. so why struggling with this? well, now I don’t mean that you can eat anything anytime…sure, you have to pay some attention with eating too…

Why is it that so many beautiful women feel its their purpose to be so skinny!! I hate it! I wish all the media that idolizes thin women would just stop all ready. Anorexia is no joke and has ended up hurting families everyday around the world...
